Our Commitment
Short Hills Ophthalmology is committed to making our website usable for every visitor. Many of our patients live with the very conditions we treat, including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other vision-related diagnoses. An accessible website is not optional for us. It is a direct extension of the care we provide in our offices.
We work to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA conformance level, and we treat these guidelines as a floor rather than a ceiling.
What We Do
Our site is built with the following accessibility practices in place:
- High contrast ratios. Text and interactive elements are designed to exceed the 4.5:1 minimum, with many areas reaching 7:1 or higher. We avoid light-gray-on-white patterns that fail patients with reduced contrast sensitivity.
- Scalable text. All type is set in relative units and tested at 200% browser zoom. Patients who rely on system font scaling or magnification should find the layout remains intact.
- Keyboard navigation. Every interactive element on the site can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone. Visible focus indicators mark the active element at all times.
- Screen reader support. Pages use a logical heading hierarchy, descriptive link text, meaningful alt attributes on images, and ARIA labels where needed so assistive technology can interpret content accurately.
- Reduced motion. Animations on the site respect the
prefers-reduced-motionoperating system setting. Visitors who have enabled this preference will see static alternatives with no loss of content. - Large tap targets. Buttons and links meet or exceed the 48px minimum touch target size recommended for motor accessibility, with primary actions sized even larger.
- Underlined links. Text links are distinguished by underline, not color alone, so they remain identifiable for visitors with color vision deficiency.
Ongoing Effort
Accessibility is not a one-time project. We review our pages on an ongoing basis, test with automated tools (axe, WAVE) and manual keyboard and screen reader checks, and address issues as they are identified. When we add new content or features, accessibility review is part of the process before anything goes live.
Third-Party Content
Some elements on our site, including embedded forms and external appointment tools, are provided by third-party vendors. We select vendors that share our accessibility standards, but we cannot control every aspect of their output. If you encounter a barrier in third-party content, please let us know so we can work with the vendor or provide an alternative path to the same information.
