Practice News
Short Hills Ophthalmology is pleased to share that Michael Farbowitz, MD, was recently featured in OffCall's Physician Spotlight series.
The interview offers a candid look at Dr. Farbowitz's approach to patient care, practice efficiency, physician well-being, and the responsibilities that come with a career in surgery.
Keeping the Patient at the Center
When asked what advice he would give a first-year resident, Dr. Farbowitz shared a principle that has guided him throughout his career:
"The enemy of good is perfect."
He also emphasized that the patient's experience must remain central to the surgeon-patient relationship. A technically strong result is important, but so are communication, expectations, trust, and the patient's understanding of their care.
Dr. Farbowitz noted that some of his most meaningful experiences have involved patients who remained appreciative even when an outcome was not perfect. Those encounters reinforce the importance of listening carefully and treating each patient as an individual.
Creating More Time for Face-to-Face Care
A Dedicated and Experienced Medical Scribe
Dr. Farbowitz identified working with a dedicated and experienced medical scribe as one of the most effective workflow changes he has made in his practice.
Electronic medical records require physicians to spend significant time documenting visits. Without support, that work can pull attention away from the patient during an appointment.
By having a trained team member assist with charting and patient education, Dr. Farbowitz can spend more of the visit speaking directly with the patient. The arrangement also helps the practice operate efficiently without losing the personal interaction that is important to patient care.
Speaking Openly About Physician Burnout
The interview also addresses physician burnout and the pressures affecting private medical practices.
Dr. Farbowitz described the financial and professional strain many physicians experience, particularly as the administrative demands of practicing medicine continue to grow. Although burnout is increasingly recognized within health care, he believes physicians do not always speak openly about their own experiences.
His comments reflect the importance of acknowledging these pressures while continuing to build working habits and support systems that allow physicians to remain focused on their patients.
Staying Present Throughout the Day
Dr. Farbowitz shared several routines that help him prepare for the demands of clinical and surgical work.
Morning exercise helps him begin the day with energy. Meditation, gratitude, and an effort to remain present help him concentrate on the patient in front of him, even during a busy office schedule.
He also incorporates yoga and core-strength training into his routine. These practices support the physical demands of a surgical career and help him maintain focus over time.
