Healthy Eyes and Summer Skies

Falling stars with a crescent moon

This summer, Star Gazing Parties are forecast to be all the rage.  Friends are gathering to enjoy candlelit decks, soft music,  and the grandeur of the night sky.  What can be a relaxing evening, however, can quickly turn to stress if you are concerned about your night vision.  Driving at night is a problem for a lot of people, and even navigating a dimly-lit party can be a concern if you have vision problems!  The best way to get a great view and relaxing evening is to make an appointment with your eye doctor and have a full exam.  Your doctor can test for distance vision issues, glare problems, etc., and present all your options to best enjoy the summer night sky.

Some common causes of night vision problems are:

Scratched, pitted, or out-of-date eyeglasses

An imperfect pair of glasses with a worn coating or a scratched surface can make focus difficult, especially at night.

An out-of-date contact lens prescription

If you don’t have an up-to-date prescription, you aren’t getting your clearest vision.  Also, make sure your contacts are not expired, even if your prescription hasn’t changed!

Dry Eye

Dry eye syndrome can cause watery eyes, eye fatigue, or blurry vision.  Our Dry Eye Clinic has a wide array of testing and treatment options to suit your lifestyle.

Vitamin deficiency

Vitamin A and zinc are very important for retina health.  Your doctor can discuss the diet or supplement changes that are right for you.

Nearsightedness or Astigmatism

Both of these common conditions can be treated with glasses, contact lenses, refractive cataract surgery, or LASIK surgery

Glaucoma

Increased eye pressure needs to be managed by an ophthalmologist to preserve your vision.  Regular testing is very important for glaucoma management.  There are a variety of treatments available to manage this condition.

Cataracts

Cloudy cataracts are a very common cause of glare.  Fortunately, cataract surgery is a common and safe procedure with an array of options to suit every lifestyle.  Talk to Dr. Farbowitz at your next appointment about your vision-correcting lens options!

Diabetes

This common condition can result in damage to the retina over time.  If you are having problems seeing in low light out of doors or inside, talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

Some solutions are as simple as a new pair of glasses or contacts, while others require a treatment plan that your doctor can design.   As always, a balanced diet, an active lifestyle, and UV ray protection are vital to your overall health and well-being!  Talk to your eye doctor at your next appointment about the lifestyle, nutritional, and medical support options to best suit your lifestyle and enjoy every opportunity that comes along this summer.  Also, stop by our optical shop to look at an array of sunglasses to protect your eyes while the sun is out!
